At Pinewood Cottage, we make every attempt to be environmentally friendly in our material use and production practices.
1-We use Radiata Pine, a soft wood tree that reacts well to forest management, which in turn produces a superior lumber with consistent characteristics and is extremely versatile. These farmed trees are grown and trimmed so that the final lumber is clear and knot free. Radiata is denser and more stable than other pine products and produces a beautiful product that is easy to finish and leaves a fine grain pattern visible after finishing, or covers well for a painted surface.
2- We purchase all of our lumber materials from reputable companies who are also concerned for the environment; www.lumberproducts.com .
3-The backs of our cupboards and cabinets are 1/8” Meranti. The door panels are ¼” knotty pine MDF.
4-Our glues and nail filler are water based and non toxic.
5-The pegs, screw hole buttons, dowels and other wood accessory parts are maple or birch.
Although we specialize in and sell mainly unfinished wood products, allowing customers to add their own special finishes and looks to what they purchase, we do offer finishing for any of our products for those who don’t have the time to or interest in the do-it-yourself projects. For an additional fee, generally a 25% mark up, we will finish it to your specifications. Finishes- For the best, richest wood tones, oil based stains are still the best choice. At Pinewood Cottage we prefer to use the better oil based stains to achieve the best look for our products. We are careful to use the safest procedures in application, storage, and disposal of these products and applicators.
Color stains and washes- Water based color stains provide versatile options for depth of color desired while still leaving the richness of the wood grain to show through.
Antiqued color finishes- By applying a darker oil stain over the color stain in an added step, the rich patina of aged wood can be achieved for an antiqued look even on new pieces.
Distressed- aged finishes-As difficult as it is to deliberately bang, gouge, and dent newly made products, sometimes that is exactly the look and finish you want. If that’s what you want, we can do it! And admittedly, it can be a great look.
Final clear coat-We put on a minimum of three coats of finish for durability and a rich fine finish.
